Shotokan Karate of Hampton Roads has been teaching this art on the Virginia Peninsula since 1981. We are a member of the East Coast Region of the International Shotokan Karate Federation (ISKF). Headed by Master Teruyuki Okazaki, a founder of the Japan Karate Association (JKA). The ISKF continues to promote traditional karate as taught by Master Gichin Funakoshi, the father of modern karate.
The ISKF is rich in tradition, but continuously moves forward to bring all countries together to follow these same guidelines. It is our sincere hope that this website be used as a guide to help in this endeavor. Several times a year we have the honor of training and testing under Sensei Okazaki (shown on the right). Master Okazaki is a tenth degree black belt and is the Chief Instructor and Chairman of the ISKF.
Locally, our Chief Instructor is Sensei Steve Pohle, a seventh degree black belt and certified ISKF instructor who has been practicing Shotokan since 1972. Sensei Pohle began his training at Ohio State University under Sensei Greer Golden who is now the head of the Mid-America Region of the ISKF.
